Fruits of the Spirit

Playing with Galatians 5:22-23 On and Off the Court

Love

Love is how we treat people when the score is tight and emotions are loud. It looks like celebrating a teammate’s effort, not just their highlights. It’s choosing encouragement over sarcasm, respect over blame, and unity over ego. Love says: we’re on the same side of the net.

Joy is a steady fire, not a mood that depends on wins. It’s playing with gratitude, energy, and freedom, even when we’re tired or trailing. Joy shows up in high-fives after mistakes, smiles in the grind, and a spirit that says: I get to play. I get to grow.

Joy
Peace

Peace is calm under pressure. It’s controlling our breathing, our body language, and our tone when chaos hits. Peace keeps a team from spiraling after a bad call or a rough run. It helps us reset fast, trust the next touch, and play the moment we’re in.

Longsuffering is patience with the process and with people. It’s staying teachable through correction, staying committed through setbacks, and staying kind when someone is struggling. Longsuffering says: I won’t quit on you, and I won’t quit on the work.

Longsuffering
Gentleness

Gentleness is strength with control. It’s how we correct teammates without cutting them, compete without trash-talking, and lead without dominating. Gentleness keeps our intensity clean. We can be tough and still be tenderhearted.

Goodness is doing the right thing when nobody forces it. It’s honesty in line calls, integrity in effort, and responsibility in how we represent our program. Goodness means we play hard, but we play right, because character matters more than a scoreboard.

Goodness
Faith

Faith is trust. Trust in God, trust in preparation, and trust in each other. It’s stepping into pressure believing you’ve been built for it, and responding to mistakes with confidence instead of fear. Faith says: God is shaping me here, and I’m not alone on this court.

Meekness is humility with backbone. It’s being coachable, owning mistakes quickly, and letting your play do the talking. Meekness doesn’t need credit, and it doesn’t crumble under criticism. It’s a quiet strength that makes the whole team better.

Meekness
Temperance

Temperance is self-control in everything: emotions, reactions, words, and effort. It’s not getting rattled by refs, opponents, or frustration. It’s staying disciplined with attitude, focus, and composure. Temperance turns talent into consistency, and consistency wins long after hype fades.

Fruits of the Spirit. The fruits root into our athletes.
