Bridging the Gap Between Learning the Game and Competing with Confidence

PDL Player development league

Player Development League

GRADES: 7th - 10TH

The Player Development League (PDL) is built for athletes in 7th–10th grades who are ready to move beyond rec volleyball and start learning the competitive side of the game, even if they’ve never played before. Think of it as the bridge between “I’m learning” and “I’m ready to compete.”

Who it’s for

PDL is a great fit for athletes who:

  • Are in 7th–10th grade

  • Have never played volleyball, or have only played recreational (rec) leagues

  • Want structured coaching and a clear path toward competitive play

What the season looks like

  • Practices: 2 practices per week

  • Length: 1.5 hours each

  • Typical schedule:

    • Monday evenings

    • Saturday mornings

  • Saturdays: Often reserved for scrimmages between PDL teams (when applicable)

What athletes will learn

PDL covers the fundamentals while also introducing athletes to the expectations and details of competitive volleyball:

  • Passing

  • Setting

  • Hitting

  • Rotations

  • Basic footwork

  • Competitive volleyball details (spacing, positioning, communication, game flow)

Training will increase in difficulty as athletes develop throughout the season, helping players grow in both skill and confidence.

Enrollment and eligibility

  • Enrollment opens: Early October and remains open until teams are full

  • Invitation only: PDL is an invitation-only league

  • Participation limit: Athletes are eligible for up to 2 seasons in the program

Practice dates

  • Practices typically run from the first Monday in December through the last Monday in February

  • Weather closures can extend the season into March

The goal of PDL

The ultimate goal of PDL is to build your athlete’s volleyball knowledge and talent so they feel prepared and confident heading into July tryouts for the following competitive season.
